What Is an Intervention?

Crisis intervention is a short-term management technique designed to reduce potential permanent damage to an individual affected by a crisis. A crisis is defined as an overwhelming event, which is commonly associated with drug and alcohol addiction, but can include divorce, violence, the passing of a loved one, or the discovery of a serious illness. Crisis intervention is an immediate and short-term emergency response to mental, emotional, physical, and behavioral distress. The goal of crisis intervention is to provide immediate support and assistance to individuals who are experiencing a crisis and to help them return to a state of emotional and psychological stability.

Crisis intervention can help individuals process their emotions, develop coping skills, and access resources that can help them manage their situation. Crisis intervention can take many forms, including counseling, therapy, support groups, and medication-assisted treatment (MAT). The type of crisis intervention that is used will depend on the individual’s needs and the nature of the crisis. Crisis intervention can be provided by a variety of professionals, including mental health professionals, medical professionals, and emergency responders. Crisis intervention teams such as those at our Arizona crisis intervention center are often available to provide immediate support and assistance to individuals who are experiencing a crisis.

When Is an Intervention Necessary?

While there has been a long-held belief that addicts must hit “rock bottom” before they are able to accept or seek help, current research in the recovery and treatment community supports the belief that family and friends should intervene early, before sustained damage occurs to the individual or anyone else.

As mentioned above, crisis intervention is necessary when an individual is experiencing an overwhelming event that can cause potentially permanent damage, such as addiction, divorce, violence, the passing of a loved one, or the discovery of a serious illness. A crisis can also occur when an individual is triggered by a traumatic event that occurred in the past. Crisis intervention is a short-term management technique designed to reduce potential permanent damage to an individual affected by a crisis. The goal of crisis intervention is to provide immediate support and assistance to individuals who are experiencing a crisis and to help them return to a state of emotional and psychological stability.

Crisis intervention is necessary when an individual is experiencing severe emotional distress, such as suicidal thoughts, self-harm, or severe anxiety or depression. Crisis intervention can also be necessary when an individual is experiencing a mental health crisis, such as a psychotic episode or a severe manic or depressive episode. In addition to these situations, crisis intervention may also be necessary when an individual is experiencing a substance abuse crisis, such as an overdose or severe withdrawal symptoms.

When You Know It's Time to Step In

We know that reaching out for help can be one of the hardest (yet most crucial) steps toward achieving long-term recovery from substance abuse. This is why we have teamed up with interventionists throughout the country in order to provide these critical services to families in need.

An experienced interventionist will be able to help the family by:

  • Conducting pre-intervention preparation.
  • Serving as a moderator during the intervention.
  • Providing assistance in transitioning individuals into rehab programs after successful interventions. If you have a loved one who is currently experiencing difficulties staying sober or whose addictive behavior has started to affect their lives as well as people close to them, call us.

Terra Nova will guide you to a qualified interventionist and help develop an individualized intervention plan so that we can provide the assistance needed to get your loved one through the door of a treatment center and on their way to a healthier, sober life.

After an Intervention: Starting Treatment

At Terra Nova Treatment, we believe that healing of the body, mind, and spirit is all necessary to overcome substance abuse. We offer a wide range of rehab options in order to facilitate your personal recovery. Our clients can go through drug and alcohol rehabilitation in a safe, comfortable environment, with holistic plans customized to their needs. Starting treatment after substance abuse involves a thorough evaluation and assessment by a psychiatrist, psychologist, or addiction professional.

Treatment programs for substance use disorder usually offer individual, group, or family therapy sessions, a focus on understanding the nature of addiction, becoming drug-free, and preventing relapse. Treatment options for opioid addiction may include buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and a combination of buprenorphine and naloxone. Behavior therapy, such as psychotherapy, can be done by a psychologist or psychiatrist, or you may receive counseling from a licensed alcohol and drug counselor. In addition, we offer therapy and counseling which may be done with an individual, a family, or a group. Support groups, such as Narcotics Anonymous or Alcoholics Anonymous, can also be very effective in coping with addiction.

Crisis intervention can be an effective approach for individuals who are experiencing a crisis related to substance abuse. Through this immediate and short-term emergency response to mental, emotional, physical, and behavioral distress, individuals can be supported in regaining a sense of control and balance in their life.
