When you get off of drugs and alcohol, you may experience uncomfortable withdrawal symptoms. In some cases, withdrawal can be dangerous or life-threatening. Detox, short for “detoxification,” is a level of care used to help people get off drugs and alcohol safely. In the detox program at Terra Nova, medical staff will be present and available to provide medications, nutrition, adequate hydration, and monitoring as needed. Detox may last anywhere from a few days to a couple of weeks. Since detox serves the purpose of helping you through the initial process of discontinuing substances and reaching physical stability, it’s used as a precursor to another level of care, such as our residential inpatient program.

Residential inpatient treatment helps you build new patterns and gives you a safe, drug-free place to heal from addiction. The residential inpatient program at Terra Nova involves groups, individual therapy, and other services, such as recreation activities, 1-2 family sessions during your stay, and medication management. You will have 24/7 medical and mental health support in residential inpatient treatment, which can be powerful and necessary when you first get sober. Residential treatment also helps by allowing you to establish healthy daily routines away from triggers that may arise in day-to-day life outside of treatment.

Partial hospitalization programs (PHP) are the most intensive kind of outpatient treatment. PHP helps you transition back into standard daily life after inpatient care because it provides thorough, continued support while allowing you to get used to living outside of a residential treatment center and maintaining a sober lifestyle. It can also be an ideal alternative to residential inpatient care for those unable to attend an inpatient program or who don’t need extensive supervision. When you enter PHP, your treatment schedule will consist of regular groups, individual therapy, and other applicable treatments (e.g., medication management) throughout the week.

Intensive outpatient programs (IOP) are the next step below PHP in intensity. While the therapies and treatments used are similar, the distinction between PHP and IOP is that clients in IOP will spend less time in treatment throughout the week. As a result, you will have increased time for external commitments, such as work, school, and family life.

Outpatient is the form of addiction treatment lowest in intensity. While your outpatient treatment plan will depend on your individual needs, those in outpatient care generally attend therapy, groups, or other relevant forms of treatment and support for just a few hours per week. The goal of outpatient care is to help you sustain sobriety, continue working through concerns that might arise, and stay connected to your support system.
